Roses from Blood

by TANGERINECAT

/

about

The song begins with a hurdy-gurdy drone and a strange bass instrument created by sampling and manipulating Paul's duda (Carpathian bagpipes) playing. This forms the accompaniment to Eugene's haunting and dramatic vocals which are followed by a hurdy-gurdy solo and pounding industrial, techno and pop beats. It also contains a beat made from a slowed down sample of the hurdy-gurdy and slowed down samples of a coffee grinder and the scooping of coffee beans recorded in Lviv, Ukraine.

Sometimes, when a person has a huge experience of pain, his personality seems to split into several parts and becomes plural. In this case, we have two personalities: a Child and a Stranger who is his protector, comforter and guide. The Stranger visits the Child in extreme situations, when he's so severely hurt that he can no longer survive the experience alone and dreams of death as a way to escape pain. The Stranger also feels pain but no one is able to see it. On his hands and chest are cuts and wounds, but they blossom with roses. And so the Stranger, whilst remaining in the shadows, writes posts on Facebook instead of the Child, responds to messages and comments, and all his thoughts and actions are filled with love for those around him and sympathy for those who have offended him, who probably also have experience of pain which manifests itself in destructive behavior towards those close to them and themselves. The Stranger makes the right decisions and knows the right words to say. He also writes songs, and this song is his self portrait. The Child calls him Captain. Probably because our Stranger is the captain of a pirate ship and the only member of it's crew, who goes to sea solely during the storm and his character is associated with rain, wind, fog and an emotionless face with deep, sad eyes.

lyrics

I'm not the one you see in me
I am a wanderer
I dress in black
My face is pale
White as snow
You could never guess
I feel at all
In the depth beneath my eyes
The scornful tales of sorrows lie
For I'm a witch and pirate too
You could never guess
I feel as you
In contrast to my pale face
I have a button hole
With blood red rose
Roses on my hands and chest
They always will appear
When I'm in pain
Roses on my hands and chest
They always will appear
When I'm in pain
